Gasification Technology: How the Gasification Process Works
Gasification Technology
Gasification technology converts carbon-rich material into a synthesis gas by heating it in a controlled, oxygen-starved environment. Nothing is burned to ash in the conventional sense. The feedstock is taken apart thermally, and what leaves the reactor is a combustible gas that can be cleaned, conditioned and either used as fuel or upgraded into higher-value products.
The Gasification Process, Stage by Stage
- Feedstock preparation: end-of-life tires, mixed plastics, municipal solid waste or biomass are sized, dried and made consistent enough for a reactor to see the same material every hour.
- Thermal conversion: pyrolysis and gasification break the hydrocarbon chains down into permanent gases, condensable vapours and a solid carbon fraction.
- Gas cleaning: particulates, tars, acid gases and trace contaminants are removed so the gas meets the specification of whatever sits downstream.
- Use or upgrading: the cleaned gas raises steam and power, or feeds a synthesis train producing hydrogen, SAF, methanol or ethanol.
Pyrolysis and Gasification Together
Klean Industries works across both routes because real waste streams rarely suit only one. Pyrolysis handles tires and plastics well and yields a gas with genuine industrial value; in Norway, a Klean project installed an integrated steam superheater fuelled by pyrolysis gas, putting that gas straight to work raising process steam. Gasification handles heterogeneous municipal and biomass streams and produces a gas better suited to synthesis. In Germany, an eco-industrial-park project integrated waste-tire gasification with plastic liquefaction, so two waste streams and two conversion routes shared one site and one utility backbone.
Why Gas Quality Decides the Project
The economics of a gasification plant are set in the gas cleaning section. A gas destined for a boiler can tolerate contaminants that would poison a catalyst within days. A gas destined for hydrogen 5.0 at 99.999% purity, or for methanol and ethanol synthesis, must be clean to a far tighter tolerance. Klean specifies the cleaning train backwards from the product you intend to sell, which is the only order that produces a plant that actually meets its nameplate.
Scaling the Technology
Klean licenses scalable technologies on a build-own-operate basis, covering design, engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning. Scale follows feedstock availability rather than ambition: a 1 MW biomass gasification plant in Japan produces renewable electricity and biochar and proves the point that a correctly sized plant beats an oversized one.
