Syngas Production & Upgrading: From Waste to Hydrogen and Fuels
Syngas Production
Syngas production is the step where a waste problem becomes a chemical feedstock. Gasifying end-of-life tires, plastics, municipal solid waste or biomass releases a synthesis gas made largely of hydrogen and carbon monoxide, and that mixture is the starting point for most of the fuels and chemicals the world already buys.
From Raw Gas to Pipeline Quality
Raw gas leaving a reactor is not a product. It carries particulates, tars, moisture, acid gases and trace species that no pipeline operator and no catalyst supplier will accept. Conditioning and cleaning bring it to pipeline-quality syngas: consistent calorific value, consistent composition, contaminants removed to specification. Klean Industries designs that train as part of the plant rather than as an afterthought bolted on when commissioning exposes the problem.
What Upgraded Syngas Becomes
- Hydrogen 5.0: 99.999% purity hydrogen for industrial and mobility customers.
- Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF): a drop-in route for waste carbon into aviation.
- Methanol: a global commodity chemical with established offtake.
- Ethanol: fuel and industrial grades from the same synthesis platform.
- Pipeline-quality syngas: sold or used directly as an industrial fuel gas.
Choosing the Product Slate
The right slate is a commercial decision before it is a technical one. Hydrogen suits sites with industrial offtakers nearby. SAF suits projects with aviation partners and policy support. Methanol and ethanol suit projects that want a liquid, storable, globally traded product and are prepared to carry a synthesis island. Klean sizes the gas cleaning and synthesis sections to the slate chosen, and designs the plant so the slate can shift later without replacing the front end.
Syngas in Operating Projects
The approach is grounded in delivered work. A German eco-industrial-park project integrated waste-tire gasification with plastic liquefaction; a Norwegian project installed an integrated steam superheater fuelled by pyrolysis gas; a 1 MW biomass gasification plant in Japan produces renewable electricity and biochar with Chubu Electric, Seiko Epson and Toyama. Each shows waste-derived gas carrying a real duty on a real site.
Delivery Model
Klean licenses scalable technologies on a build-own-operate basis and delivers design, engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning, so syngas specification, cleaning and upgrading stay the responsibility of one party.
